Sales achieved in 1996 by the
DELHAIZE 'LE LION' GROUP
reached BEF 411.6 billion against BEF 368.5 billion in 1995, an increase of +
11.7%. At the end of December 1996, the DELHAIZE 'LE LION' GROUP
operated 1,700 sales outlets against 1,610 a year earlier. In the course of the
financial year, 124 new sales outlets were opened. The consolidated results of
the DELHAIZE 'LE LION' GROUP are expected to be 15 to 20 % higher than
in the previous financial year. It is anticipated that a higher dividend will be
paid. The growth of the DELHAIZE 'LE LION' GROUP will continue in 1997
thanks to the opening of more than 200 sales outlets.
In Belgium,
DELHAIZE 'LE LION' S.A. achieved
sales, V.A.T. included, of BEF 106.9 billion against BEF 103.5 billion in 1995,
an increase of 3.3%. In 1996, the Belgian retail network grew due to the
opening of 36 new sales outlets while others were modernized or extended. In
1997, 30 sales outlets will be opened and more than BEF 2 billion in capital
expenditures are budgeted.
In the U.S.A.,
FOOD LION, Inc. achieved sales of USD 9
billion, an increase of 9.7%. Same stores sales increased by 5.7%. 64 FOOD
LION Supermarkets were opened during the financial year, of which 9 were former
Food Fair stores. 124 existing supermarkets were renovated. The acquisition of
Kash N' Karry Food Stores operating 100 supermarkets in the Tampa area in
Florida, was completed on December 18, 1996. Kash N' Karry will be consolidated
in FOOD LION's accounts from the 1997 financial year onwards. FOOD LION will
open 55 to 60 new supermarkets and renovate 120 other ones in 1997.
In
Atlanta,
SUPER DISCOUNT MARKETS achieved sales of USD 275
million, a decrease of 6.1%. The opening of a fourteenth store is expected in
1997.
In France,
P.G. achieved sales, V.A.T. included, of FRF
2.1 billion (BEF 12.6 billion), an increase of 6.3%. In 1996, 3 supermarkets as
well as 7 affiliated P.G. Partenaires were opened. One P.G. Supermarket and 9
P.G. Partenaires will be added in 1997.
In Greece,
ALFA-BETA achieved sales, V.A.T. included, of
GRD 95.3 billion (BEF 12.3 billion), an increase of 16.8%. The supermarket chain
grew by 4 more stores. A distribution centre was opened during the last quarter
of the financial year. The opening of 7 stores is planned for 1997.
In the Czech Republic,
DELVITA continued its growth with
sales, V.A.T. included, of CZK 3.7 billion (BEF 4.1 billion) an increase of
54.7%. During the course of the financial year, a distribution centre and 10
new supermarkets were opened, which brings to 30 the number of stores in
operation. 10 new openings are planned for 1997.
