Delhaize America Names Michael Waller General Counsel


Salisbury, N.C. — Delhaize America Inc., (NYSE: DZA, DZB), has named Michael Waller to the position of General Counsel and Secretary of the Company. Waller currently is the managing partner of the London office of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, L.L.P., an international law firm. Waller previously served as the managing partner of Akin Gump's Moscow office, and has worked in the Houston, Texas and Washington D.C. offices of the firm as well. Akin Gump has served as outside counsel to the Company since 1993. Waller's position will be effective July 1, 2000.

Waller earned a bachelor's degree from Auburn University, and a juris doctor from the University of Houston, where he was editor-in-chief of the Houston Law Review. Prior to entering private practice, Waller clerked for U.S. District Judge Robert O'Connor in the Southern District of Texas. Waller and his family will relocate to Salisbury, North Carolina.

Salisbury, N.C.-based Delhaize America is the parent company of Salisbury, N.C.-based Food Lion and Tampa, Fla.-based Kash n' Karry. Following the closing of its pending acquisition of Scarborough, Maine-based Hannaford Bros. Co., Delhaize America will be the fifth largest supermarket operator in the nation with more than 1,400 stores virtually spanning the entire Eastern Seaboard. Delhaize America is a member of the New York Stock Exchange.
